The Schengen Information System in the new Member States in 2008

On June 7 the European Parliament supported the Draft Decision of the EU Council regarding introduction of the Schengen Information System (SIS) in nine Eastern European and Central European countries, including Latvia, without amendments. Actualised data basis will allow the new member States to involve in the Schengen system as its full-fledged members.

The Schengen Information System (SIS) is a large-scale data basis allowing the institutions of the member States to cooperate and exchange the information in order to cancel internal border control. The system includes detailed information about persons and objects, for example, means of transport. Competent institutions can use the system data for prevention of crime in order to check persons on outer borders or in the territory of Member States, as well to issue visas and residence permits.
In order to involve in the Schengen system, the member States should fulfil technical requirements till August 31, 2007. If those are fulfilled, states will be able to open their terrestrial and maritime borders till January 31, 2008, and air borders – till March 29, 2008.
