On 24 May, the Cabinet of Ministers approved amendments to the Law on Support for Ukrainian Civilians proposed by the Ministry of the Interior and drafted by the Ministry of Economy for further submission to the Saeima, which provide for a transitional period in the provision of support to Ukrainian civilians.
The amendments provide that Ukrainian civilians who have already applied for, are receiving, or are about to expire primary aid may be provided with additional primary aid — accommodation and catering - for an additional period of up to 30 days, but the total primary aid provided may not exceed 120 days.
The possibility of receiving primary aid for an additional period of up to 30 days applies to those Ukrainian civilians who have applied for, received, or have already received the 90 days of primary aid until 24 May 2022 inclusive.
The Cabinet of Ministers also agreed that legal entities will be able to receive housing allowances in the future.
Considering that the number of Ukrainian civilians arriving in Latvia fleeing the hostilities in Ukraine is constantly increasing, there is a need to ensure sufficient accommodation capacity.
In addition, taking into account the protracted hostilities preventing the return of Ukrainian civilians to Ukraine and the capacity of the Ukrainian civilians hosted so far to be permanently accommodated or catered for, additional support is needed.
