On Saturday, July 25, a Lithuanian citizen was detained at a Silene border checkpoint who tried to bribe border guards.
During the border check of persons crossing the state border, the border guards found a Lithuanian citizen entering Latvia by truck, who placed a 5 euro note on the car seat and asked the border guards not to open the refrigerator in the vehicle.
The man gave a bribe to cross the border with food, the import of which into the European Union is prohibited.
Criminal proceedings were initiated against a Lithuanian citizen born in 1964 for bribery under Section 323, Paragraph one of the Criminal Law, while in Daugavpils Prosecutor's Office the person was prosecuted by concluding an agreement with the prosecutor on guilt and a fine of 10 minimum monthly salaries, i. 4 300 euros.
Bribery qualifies as a serious crime punishable by imprisonment for up to five years, temporary deprivation of liberty, forced labor or a fine of ten to two thousand minimum monthly wages set by the Republic of Latvia in accordance with the Latvian Criminal Law.
