On Tuesday, September 1, border guards detained another bribe-giver at the Terehova border checkpoint. Giving a bribe of 50 euros, a German citizen tried to bribe the border guards.
During the border check of persons crossing the state border, the border guards refused to leave Russia for a German citizen and her spouse, as the movement of persons and vehicles through the external border crossing points of the European Union has been banned since March 17 this year.
Upon receiving the refusal to leave, the woman applied to the border guards again, this time with a 50-euro banknote in her passport, which was intended as a bribe to allow the border guards to leave for Russia.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated against a German citizen born in 1979 under Chapter XXIV of the Criminal Code Criminal Offenses in the Service of State Institutions. The investigation is ongoing.
Bribery qualifies as a serious crime punishable by up to five years' imprisonment, temporary deprivation of liberty, forced labor or a fine of ten to two thousand minimum monthly wages set by the Republic of Latvia, in accordance with the Latvian Criminal Law.
This year, this is the 21st case of bribery, while last year the border guards detected 8 cases of bribery, of which in seven cases fines in the amount of 10 minimum monthly salaries were imposed on persons prescribed by the prosecutor, i. 4,300 euros each.
