On Tuesday, June 30, the Cabinet decided to extend the period of membership of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia ( EUMM Georgia ) to one official of the State Border Guard with a special degree of service.
According to the government declaration, Latvia continues to support international efforts to strengthen security and promote stability through participation in UN, EU, OSCE and NATO missions and operations, with up to 30 civilian experts sent annually to participate in international missions.
By letter dated May 26, 2020, the Civilian Operation Commander of the European External Action Service, requested the Latvian expert to extend the period of participation to EUMM Georgia until October 31, 2020 due to the current decision of the Government of Georgia on the closure of its borders, the decisions of many European governments regarding the closure of the borders, as well as the unavailability of flights between Tbilisi and the rest of Europe.
Currently, 23 Latvian civilian experts participate in international missions, including:
- European Union observation mission in Georgia - 8;
- European Organisation for Security and Cooperation Special Observation Mission in Ukraine - 6;
- European Union Advisory Mission in Ukraine - 9.
