Speaking in the public space about possible solutions to limit the spread of Covid-19 in schools, the Minister for the Interior Sandis Ģirģens calls not to support distance learning for pupils from 1st to 6th grade, because in the long run the solution may not be successful for quality education.
Ģirģens emphasized that there is no long-term strategy for a solution for distance learning for students from grades 1 to 6. In the opinion of the minister, pupils from 1st to 6th grade do not have motivation and skills to learn fully without the support of parents or other companions.
"I believe that the restrictions on the spread of Covid-19 should be logical, targeted, really aimed at limiting the cause of the virus and not on the assumption that students in grades 1 to 6 could be one of the main reasons for the spread of the virus. Successful crisis management is based on the ability to manage risks without stress and chaotic decisions,” said Ģirģens, emphasizing that he does not deny the problems of Covid-19 spread in schools, but also calls for thinking about providing quality education.
The minister also calls for the spread of the virus in schools to be addressed by working with specific schools and not excluding all schools at once.
