On 7 June, the Health and Sports Centre of the Ministry of the Interior hosted a solemn opening ceremony for the psychological support course for Ukrainian State Border Guard Service officials, which provides for a 12-day psychological support course at the Department “Dzintari” of the Health and Sports Centre of the Ministry of the Interior in Jurmala. It is expected that 100 officers will receive the support by 22 December this year.
Minister of the Interior Maris Kučinskis said that Ukrainians are not and will not be alone in the fight against Russian aggression - Latvia will continue to provide its support, as it has done so far. “I am clearly aware that Ukrainians have been fighting for a long time not only for their freedom, but also for the freedom of all of us. In this situation, it is our duty to give the people who are fighting against Russian aggression a chance to regain their strength. I believe in the victory of Ukrainians in this war,” said M. Kučinskis.
The Ukrainian State Border Guard Service officials will be hosted and provided with psychological support and physical training sessions, as well as with meals. During the psychological support course, officials will also participate in tailor-made psychological and sport activities in groups and individually.
One of the prerequisites for the successful performance of duties in different situations is the physical and mental health of individuals, and their ability to preserve and maintain it, but in Ukraine, due to the emergency situation, the war and the lack of resources, it is not possible to provide psychological support to officials to restore their emotional balance and their ability to perform their duties.
In December last year, State Border Guard officials travelled to Ukraine to familiarize themselves with the current situation in Ukraine in the context of Russian aggression, to obtain information on the tasks of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine in a crisis situation and to develop cooperation in strengthening the capabilities of the Latvian and Ukrainian border guard institutions in war conditions. During the visit, the representatives of the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service made a request for psychological assistance support, as the officials of the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service are not only physically and emotionally traumatized, but also emotionally exhausted.
