State Police has detained a man previously sanctioned for such crimes for several bicycle thefts this week. A targeted job at Ligo festival shows that he has committed eight two-wheel thefts in the Northern District of Riga. Criminal proceedings have been instituted in connection with the incident and the suspect has been remanded in custody.
Criminal proceedings for several bicycle theft committed in recent months were launched at the Riga Northern District of the State Police. It should be noted that the victims had provided both video and photographs of the alleged perpetrator to the media. In June, news of the theft of a bicycle from the basement of a multi-apartment building on Snow Street was circulating in the media. Similarly, a video was published in the media this month showing a man wearing a hood and a face mask stealing a bicycle from the landing. The officers of the North precinct of Riga recognized the alleged perpetrator, because he had previously been seen by the police for the same crimes.
On June 22, the officials of the State Police Riga Regional Council held the alleged thief for another crime, and later transferred the alleged thief to the Riga North station for the continuation of the work in relation to the bicycle thefts committed previously.
The detainee has now confessed to eight bicycle thefts committed between May and June of this year in Sarkandaugava, Vecmilgrāvis and the Quiet Centre of Riga. The man had stolen mostly unconnected bicycles and connected bicycles in the stairway enclosures, turning security locks.
The suspected man was born in 1989 and has been previously sanctioned for bicycle thefts, as well as for drug use.
Eight criminal proceedings have been initiated in the context of the proceedings, qualified in accordance with the third paragraph of Article 175 of the Criminal Law, for theft, if committed upon entering the room. At the moment, the police are working to recover the stolen bicycles and to return them to the legitimate owners.
Detention of a detained man is a suitable security measure.
We call on citizens to take care of the safety of their bicycles and to keep them in a well-thought place. Climbers and first-floor balconies are easily accessible to thieves, so it's not advisable to keep bicycles there! It is also necessary to purchase a quality bicycle lock, preferably U-shaped or V-shaped, and the bicycle should always be connected.
