On 14 December, the Saeima expressed its confidence in the new Minister for the Interior Māris Kučinskis, who has significant professional experience in public administration, as well as in the Saeima and local government.
M. Kučinskis has been a member of the Saeima for seven terms and served as Prime Minister from 2016 to 2019.
During his tenure in the Saeima, he chaired both the National Security Commission and the Sustainable Development Commission. From 2004 to 2006, M. Kučinskis was Minister for Regional Development and Local Government.
For two terms - from 1996 to 1997 and from 1998 to 2003 - M. Kučinskis was the Chairman of the Valmiera City Council. Also, Kučinskis has experience of working for the Latvian Association of Large Cities.
