In response to the current situation on the border of Latvia and Belarus, on Wednesday, August 11, the Minister for the Interior Marija Golubeva will attend the Silene Border Control Point. The Minister will be accompanied by Guntis Pujāts, Chief of State Border Guard. During this visit, parliamentarians from the Defence, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee will have the opportunity to get acquainted with Minister’s 10-step action plan to strengthen the border, as well as the real situation on the eastern border of Latvia. Minister will also meet municipal authorities to coordinate action in response to the challenges of irregular migration.
Currently, the State Border Guard is working in an increased readiness level to react and prevent illegal border crossings of Latvia. Taking into account the increased pressure of illegal migration on the border of Latvia-Belarus in recent days, the State Border Guard has taken the following measures:
- a group of potential illegal border crossers were not allowed to enter the country;
- on Saturday, 39 irregular migrants were detained on the border, on Sunday - 35, and on Monday - 86.
On August 6, the Ministry of the Interior submitted a draft decision to the Cabinet of Ministers, informing of the necessary financial resources to strengthen border control. It is planned that Latvia's eastern border will be equipped with modern technological solutions.
During the visit, it is also scheduled that the Minister will attend Accommodation Centre Of Detained Foreigners "Daugavpils" and the State Border Guard headquarters “Daugavpils”.
