Medical statistics show that last year 467 people were severely injured in road accidents and were taken to hospital with polygamy injuries, or several parts of the body, while another 100 were killed. In order to reduce the number of road accident victims, the State Police, in cooperation with the Emergency Medical Service, calls on every driver to carefully reconsider his or her driving culture on the road and to respect others, not to go reckless and aggressive.
The Head of the Emergency Medical Service (NMPD) Physician Brigade, Emergency Medical Doctor Ieva Tīruma, stresses that aggressive driving is intolerance to those around us who carry bloody events and tragedies. The doctor points out that aggressive driving can be seen as a deliberate annoyance for society, as not only the driver of the car suffers, but also innocent people, including families with children who have crawled to the reckless along the way.
Road accidents are the most likely to get the most serious injuries encountered by NMPD medics. These include polygamy, or several parts of the body: large bone fractures, spinal injuries, head injuries, facial bone fractures, including various organ disorders and internal bleeding. Such injuries will have consequences for the whole of life and often lead to disability. The emergency medical doctor, Ieva Tuma, emphasizes that sometimes the injuries are so severe that the man and his future life are similar to the car wreck that was injured in an accident. “Very often, medics cannot help the victims immediately because they are printed in the car. These people for firefighters – rescuers first have to cut out of the vehicle and it takes time, as a result of which we have experienced situations where victims are suffocating, bleeding and dying while still in the car,” informs Ieva Tīruma.
NMPD's doctor highlights the importance of bringing politram patients to hospital within an hour. “If more than one hour has passed, the risk of lethality increases dramatically,” Ieva Tīruma informs. This year up to May 20, a 14-fold resuscitation event has been carried out following road accidents: revival at the site of the accident.
Not only the aggressor or the cause of the accident, but also innocent drivers and their family members, are suffering in traffic accidents. Children also die because of recklessness, intolerance and neglect. The National Police Safety Campaign “Absent driving scars” calls on citizens to think about the consequences of aggressive driving, both in physical terms and in psychological terms, of entering the road in an accident or thereby losing their loved ones.
Transport Safety Campaign "Aggressive driving leaves scars" is organised by the State Police in cooperation with the Road Traffic Safety Directorate, the Emergency Medical Service and the School for Safe Driving. The campaign is funded from the resources of the Latvian Vehicle Insurers Bureau.
