On Tuesday, 16 July, the Cabinet of Ministers reappointed Normunds Mežviets for a third term as the Director General of Latvian State Security Service (VDD).
In the assessment of the Minister for the Interior Rihards Kozlovskis, N. Mežviets has been leading VDD professionally and convincingly, therefore the minister had no doubts about submitting the candidacy of N. Mežviets for approval in the post for the next term. According to R. Kozlovskis, in the current conditions of hybrid war, professional and patriotic leadership, which ensures state security, is especially important for the internal affairs services, as is the case with N. Mežviets.
N. Mežviets has been the Director General of VDD since 2014. He began his career in VDD almost 20 years ago.
During the last years, in response to the war started by Russia in Ukraine and other security challenges, under the leadership of N. Mežviets VDD has significantly expanded its activities and the publicly releasable results of the Service's activities have significantly increased.
Last year, VDD publicly informed about the so far largest number of persons detained during the year on suspicion of espionage and providing assistance to a foreign country in an activity directed against Latvia, namely 10 persons. Also this year, VDD has already provided the public with information about three persons detained on suspicion of such crimes.
