On 1 March, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to extend participation in the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM Georgia). Latvia supports by one State Police officer and one State Border Guard officer with a special service rank.
The letter of 13 September 2021 from the European External Action Service Civilian Operations Commander requested to extend the participation of the above-mentioned Latvian experts in EUMM Georgia. Engagement of a State Border Guard extended until 3 March 2023 and that of a State Police until 7 April 2023.
EUMM Georgia is an unarmed observation mission, which started its work on 1 October 2008 in accordance with the agreement between Russia and Georgia of 12 August 2008. The EU is acting as a mediator in the mission in accordance with the European Security and Defense Policy Decision of 8 September 2008, contributing to stability in Georgia and the surrounding region.
Currently, 21 Latvian civilian experts are participating in international missions, including:
European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia - 8, including 7 from the subordinate institutions of the Ministry of the Interior;
European Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine - 5;
European Union Advisory Mission in Ukraine - 8.
In line with the Government’s declaration, Latvia continues to support international efforts to strengthen security and promote stability by participating in UN, EU, OSCE and NATO missions and operations - up to 30 civilian experts are deployed annually to international missions.
