On Tuesday, 11 August, the National Security Service (VDD) celebrated its 101 st anniversary at a solemn event and the new flag of The VDD was blessed in honour of the anniversary.
The new flag of the VDD includes the slogan of the VDD in Latin and Latvian: “Semper vigilamus pro patria” or “Forever in the Fatherland Guard”, symbolising a loyal and dedicated service for the good of Latvia. The VDD flag was blessed by the Chief Archbishop of the National Armed Forces, Elmārs Pļaviņš.
The history of the VDD began on 11 August 1919, when the first civil counterintelligence and internal security service of the State of Latvia was founded, the State Security Department, which was the predecessor of the VDD. . The name of the security service has been changed several times over time, but its mission – to protect Latvia's national security from internal and external threats – has remained unchanged.
