On Wednesday, 4 January, the Minister for the Interior, Māris Kučinskis, met with the US Ambassador to Latvia, John Carwile, in Riga to discuss cooperation between the two countries in the field of national internal security.
During the meeting, it was noted that bilateral relations between Latvia and the United States are close and intensive, and the positive results achieved in the field of internal affairs were welcomed.
M. Kučinskis stressed that one of the most important issues where good cooperation between the two countries has been established is border security. “We are united in our efforts to strengthen the eastern border, which, as we all know, is also the external border of the European Union and NATO,” said M. Kučinskis.
In particular, the discussion highlighted cooperation on providing support to Ukraine. The US side appreciates the support provided by the Latvian Government to Ukrainian refugees, noting that the Latvian Ministry of the Interior is doing its best to coordinate assistance to Ukrainian refugees.
The US is a strategic partner and ally of Latvia and the two countries have a special relationship, including in the area of internal affairs.
